about the gallery

"It is my private place, where I live, work and dream.
I call it 'Hilary's Factory.'"

One can see my world takes place in a contemporary glass and wood house on an inspirational property located halfway between San Francisco and Palo Alto, the Gateway to Silicon Valley. This home, this respit from the rest of the world, this Factory of artistic ideas and forms, is both Studio and Gallery.

The Studio

In the studio, one can observe the many details from which I work. Brushes, cluttered equipment, paints, and all my art reference books. Here is where all the main work happens. Visitors can see my favorite comfortable armchair where I sit and think quitely for hours, or even days meditating on ideas and forms before starting the actual work on a piece.

In my studio, all my ideas come together and this is where I feel a kind of bravura in arabesques, or paint sometimes squeezed directly from the tube. Marks have a kind of rhythm with fat, flat and black spots. When working, I prefer to wield my brushes to the sounds of rock and roll, making them dart across the canvas with any number of beats and pauses so music is an important part of the atmosphere.

My studio is surrounded by windows, looking out on the world and my collection of pieces both personal and acquired. I am influenced by the seasons and the life in my garden--the oak trees, the subtle lighting effects of a single cloud passing over the area. I am able to see and welcome the outside into my studio as I apply my inspirations to my canvas.

My studio is my home within my home.

The Gallery

My home also serves as my own private gallery both indoors and out. In this gallery there are a great many pieces of art, including my recent paintings, sculptures, and ceramics as well as the pieces I have collected from other artists over the years whether they be friends or acquaintances. I am surrounded by art in every aspect and in every sense.

Many of the pieces in my gallery, are of many different scales and media. From 10 foot wood sculptures, and life size humanesque people, to the smallest ceramic piece measuring only inches across. I accept that true inspiration comes in many sizes and forms. I am inspired to work without boundaries and achieve my own goals by my own collection.

My collection is a work of my heart.
